Bad breath is a problem experienced by many people. For some though, halitosis is an ongoing, and, sometimes, a socially and professionally debilitating condition that people continually find themselves struggling with. As a sufferer of chronic bad breath you are very aware of how people react to you when they get a whiff of your breath. It can be a rather humiliating experience.

What causes chronic halitosis?

This condition is caused by naturally occurring bacteria that normally live within the surface of the tongue and in the throat. These bacteria are good bacteria and are supposed to be there. They serve a purpose and we need them. The purpose of these bacteria is to aid us in our digestion by breaking down proteins. These proteins are made up of amino acids, two of which are dense with sulfur.

The problem arises when these good bacteria come into contact with these compounds and volatile sulfur compounds, or VSC's, are formed. These VSC's are what cause our mouths to taste bad and create offensive odors.

And, making matters worse, the following add to the problem, making the condition even more difficult to deal with. Those conditions are:

Dry Mouth
Post Nasal Drip
High Protein Foods
